Crockpot Spiced Cider

Crockpot Spiced Cider is a delicious, maple flavored, hot cider recipe for the winter and fall seasons. A perfect option for Thanksgiving and Christmas also. Ingredients include: Bottled apple cider, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, black peppercorns, orange peel and maple syrup. It is also a low calories, low fat, low cholesterol, low sodium, low carbohydrates, heart-healthy and Weight Watchers (3) PointsPlus recipe. Makes (8) servings. Prep Time: 20 Minutes.
Cooking Time: 5 Hours.
Total Time: 5 Hours-20 Minutes.

Equipment Needed: (3 to 4 quart size) crockpot.

INGREDIENTS:

4  long strips orange peel*(see note below)
2 -3 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
3 cardamom pods
25 whole black peppercorns
5 cups apple cider
1 cup water
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
8 black tea bags

*Note:
When removing the orange peel strips, use a vegetable peeler and avoid picking up any of the bitter white pith.

DIRECTIONS:

1. For a spice bag: Place orange peel, broken cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom, and peppercorns in the center of a double-thick, 6 to 8 inch square of 100% cotton cheesecloth. Bring up corners; tie closed with clean kitchen string.

2. In a 3 to 4 quart-size slow cooker combine spice bag, apple cider, water and syrup.

3. Cover; cook on LOW 5 to 6 hours. Add in the tea bags, draping strings over sides of cooker. Cover; let stand for 10 minutes. Remove tea bags, gently pressing tea bags against sides of cooker to release liquid. Discard tea bags and spice bag. Ladle the hot cider into mugs. If desired, garnish each drink with an additional cinnamon stick.

NOTE: (If desired; you may any extra cider in the slow cooker on the warm setting for up to 1 hour after the recipe has finished cooking).
